I never in a million years imagined that I would ever want to be a nurse. It just was not “my thing”. However, that was not my decision to make. As fate would have it, here I am writing “why I want to become a nurse essay”, because I had a change of mind and heart. The perception that society has of nurses has been deteriorating over the years, primarily because they are blamed for offering poor care to patients. This is not all nurses though, there are wonderful nurses out there and I intend to be among them in the future.
At elementary school, almost every student typically has a dream of what profession they hope to take up when they become adults:
Although it’s not always that we all get the jobs we hoped for, by the time that we’re graduating from college, the majority of people will have taken a different career path, and often for the greater good. I should know since I hope to be a nurse which is quite different from what I wanted to do. Why I want to be a nurse essay will reveal what inspired the change of heart. The field of medicine has its ups and downs, considering how expensive the cost of treatment has become and the different new technologies used to improve patient care and treatment. Why I want to be a nurse essay sample will highlight the following:
There are individuals who will come into your life unexpectedly as strangers and totally transform your perception regarding certain aspects of life. I never wanted to be a nurse, correctly put, I never thought I would be a nurse until I met one of the most wonderful people that I have ever come across in my life. This is a story of how I met a nurse who inspired and motivated me.
I was visiting my grandmother as I had always done every week. However, as it turned out, that day would be different. Normally, I would meet the nurse on duty, taking care of my grandmother, for some few brief minutes in the lobby, but on that day, I did not. Instead, she came to my grandmothers’ room. The moment she walked in, my Nana’s face lit up. She was kind and sweet in every sense of the word. She was just as caring for the other patients that she attended to. I was more than impressed. It is not easy to make a terminally or chronically ill person have a smile on their face with so much ease as she did.
Of course, I had to inquire more from my Nana regarding her. Her only response was “she’s an angel”. Knowing Nana, that statement was worth investigating further. Long story short, the nurse was touching the lives of patients in every way that she could. Her kindness and care made the patients filled with hope rather than despair. I knew that I had to have a chat with her and when I did, it was life-changing. She was an inspiration and made me want to be a nurse.
People get into different careers for a variety of reasons. Personally, after having the talk with the nurse, I decided to do some research about the profession. By the time I was done, I knew that nursing was definitely what I wanted to do. There are two factors that play a significant role in making a decision on the career path we take:
Considering nursing is more of a hands-on kind of job, there are personal attributes that one must hold to be successful and good at it. My research led me to match the traits with some of my skills and I knew that it is what I want to do.
The listed are traits that every nurse needs to be in a position to take good care of patients. Luckily, I possess the traits and I saw it as a sign that nursing was really what I was meant to go into. However, the attributes are applicable to a number of professions. What counts is the personal choices that we make. Why I want to be a nurse essay expresses why anyone can be a nurse but it is the choices that we make that really dictate what we eventually end up doing. One thing is certain though, nursing is not for the faint of heart and requires a lot of sacrifice and patience.
Dealing with people is not easy especially when you’re offering services. For a nurse, it is even more challenging considering that they are dealing with people in pain who at times tend to be rude and harsh. A professional nurse understands that these people are just in pain and scared. All they require is a kind gesture and reassurance, and they will be good. Nursing is all about helping people and giving them hope!
It would be unrealistic not to acknowledge that money plays a significant role in the career path that we take. Of course, as I researched nursing, I had to check out how much income I would be making. Different nurses earn different wages, depending on their specialty. Salary ranges from $44,090 to $133,000 annually. I hope to be a general nurse practitioner, they earn around $107,460 annually. We need cash to survive.
When I finally figured out what I wanted, I got a chance to volunteer at a clinic within my locality. I had a chance to interact with more professionals and my conviction rose. The way they went about their duties was inspiring in every manner. The love that they portrayed for what they do was just impressive. The truth is, doing something that you don’t love will be depressing not just to you but to those around you too. When you love what you do, you help make a difference and enjoy it. Other than the volunteer work being an inspiration, it made me realize that palliative care is actually fun and not as stressful as most individuals perceive.
Why I want to become a nurse essay highlights the fact that my decision to be one is driven by the desire to care for and help those that are unwell from illnesses. Sickness comes with challenges and at times those around you are the ones who will help you overcome the ailment. My inner desires and the professionals that I have encountered have been an inspiration to me. I am more than certain that nursing is the career I want to get into. This is why I want to be a nurse!
